The 2015 season is underway with plenty of softball action at local diamonds. This year the league revamped the schedule and games are held in doubleheaders on Sundays, but in some cases not on the same field. A team will play at 4:00 in Bombay for example and then upon completion will run to the Legion or Frogtown field and play another game at 6:00. The rain came down slow and steady but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the players of the biggest lacrosse gathering ever pulled off in the territory. The event went off with beautiful warm weather, a cool breeze to cool off the fisherman, and many fish stories and memories for the kids. Our game was celebrated and a deeper appreciation for Canada's National Sport was on display at the Anowarako:wa Arena last weekend. The Akwesasne Tewa'a:raton Festival was a two day event featuring a lacrosse tournament, history classes of the game and Akwesasne's contribution to it. The annual event came to a close last Wednesday, May 13. The Totas had three days of fun and games and the event was enjoyed by all. Last week the National Elementary Honor Society students at the St. Regis Mohawk School took a trip to Syracuse University. They also went to the Carousel Mall where Wonderworks is located. The sport of Roller Derby is seeing a comeback from the 1970's and the four-year-old Seaway Roller Derby Girls League held a match on Cornwall Island last weekend called Thunder In The Valley. The Cornwall Power Dames hosted and defeated the Renfrew Valkyries 219-133. The sport is making a resurgence across Canada and the U.S. with the Seaway Roller Derby Girls League being the local loop. The Junior B Indians put up some goals in Brampton, Ontario last Saturday but unfortunately the host Excelsiors scored in bunches to win 9-7. Tahy's Fine Arts along with Walking With Our Sisters hosted an Open Mic Night last Friday. Two weeks ago there was another successful edition of the Mohawk Language show or Tentewakierronnion (Let’s Act) at the Kanatakon School. There are currently Dance Classes at the St. Regis Recreation and last month the Salmon River Drama Club put on a performance of “Into the Woods” with several Akwesasne kids on stage and their parents taking part behind the scenes.
