It was a beautiful day to hold this year's edition of the Native North American Travelling College Friendship Day which was held at the Tsiionkwanontiio Heritage Site. The annual event featured a fiddler, throat singers, dancers, tug of war, arts and crafts vendors and lots of traditional music. With lacrosse and softball winding down and hockey and volleyball season seemingly a long way off, the lull on the local sports scene is now filled by Soccer. The Akwesasne Women's Soccer had their inaugural games last weekend at Generations Park and at Salmon River. In Hogansburg one of the teams – Hilltop Inflatables, met Sergei's Strikers and won 3-2. The Akwesasne vs. Kahnawake rivalry has produced some exciting lacrosse finals over the decades, and last weekend another was added to the books. The Second Annual Akwesasne Masters Lacrosse Championship was held on Cornwall Island and the visitors won this round. The Kahnawake Rapids met Jobu's Medicine Men in the Gold Medal game and were comprised of local Akwesasne players. The scorching hot weather continued last week but the kids braved the heat to have some fun at the Akwesasne Mohawk School. The Akwesasne Board of Education held their annual Funfair with bounce houses, movies, games and waterslides, not to mention free snow cones to cool them off. It was too hot to cook during last Saturday's scorcher so the Mohawk Nation Longhouse had your back. A benefit cabbage roll dinner was held at the Longhouse Cookhouse and the cost was a donation. Another successful program went into the books for the Positive Place for Kids and Teens. The St. Regis Mohawk School was open for business over the summer and hosted the ABGC/Johnson O'Malley summer program, which like the pilot project last year, was a huge success. Last weekend in soaring heat, the local girls waited until extra innings to get their bats heated up as well. Legion/Hilltop Inflatables played in their league playoffs and took Orlando/ Open Net to nine innings before exploding with seven runs to win it 10-3. The score was tied at three after seven innings and in the Legion/ Hilltop's half of the ninth inning Orlando/Open Net switched pitchers. It was a heartbreaking loss to a perfect tournament so far as the Akwesasne Women Warriors were blanked 3-0 in their semi-final. But up until then they were unbeatable winning all their games in the preliminary round with 14 goals for 1st place in the tournament. Local kids got a chance to learn some fun hands on science projects this summer. The University of Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario's Queens University Engineering programs held the annual "Science Quest" event at the Cornwall Island school. Despite a championship game played in almost total darkness, there were lots of home runs and laughs at the Fifth Annual Event and it was as successful as ever. The corner of Route 37 and 37C was very busy last July 4th weekend. The gas station had been opened for a while, but they held their Grand Opening and a lot of people got involved. The big draw was .15 cents off a gallon of gasoline and cars lined up around the parking lot to get in on this. A.C.F.S. recently acquired a trailer, which they intend to use at the various community events they attend. Young men and women moved onto the next phase of school last week with their ceremonies. The Akwesasne Mohawk School celebrated their grade eight graduation with an elaborate ceremony Wednesday, June 24. Principal Lynn McCarthy opened the proceedings with a poem about the students' future and how it is up to them on whether they succeed or not in life. Local dads were celebrated in Hogansburg over the weekend as Fathers from all over Indian Country were recognized on this Fathers Day weekend. The International Native American Responsible Fatherhood Day was held last Saturday, the day before Fathers Day, at Generations Park in Hogansburg. The day is in its third year. Ieweras Gray was a strong, beautiful, young woman who was battling Leukemia. In life she was giving, and through her terrible battle she thought of others and their families who were going through what she was going through. The two-day annual tournament held at Buck Whites Field on St. Regis Road turned into one day because of a lack of teams, but when it was over, the Saints won the championship, and the six teams who entered got in a day of hits, great catches, lots of laughs (intentional and unintentional) and fun all the way around. The school recognized their top readers last week by letting them go nuts in the gym. The rain stopped for a day last Saturday and Generation Park was host to some of the best of the Attack Lacrosse club and some had a chance to play another version of it. Stickball. Just as the big Pow-Wow has become an end of the summer tradition at Anowarako:wa Arena another one is starting up as a beginning of the summer tradition in St. Regis. The school held their annual Pow-Wow last Wednesday, June 3 with out of town guests as well as proud parents, proud totas and proud teachers on hand.
