The first season of the Akwesasne Women's Soccer season came to a close, and as with any championship game, it went right down to the wire. Hilltop Inflatables scored the only goal in this game last Sunday at Salmon River against the Stars and the action went back and forth right down to the final whistle. The Akwesasne Pee-Wee girls team lost a close one to Cornwall earlier this week 4-2 on Cornwall Island. Emily Aldredge and Maranda Richer scored for Akwesasne while Kaitlyn Crowder had a big night for the visitors scoring three and Leah MacDonald scoring once. No tricks but lots of treats at Akwesasne Schools and Daycare Centers as the kids all had a blast. The Snye School was treated to a hayride around the area with stops to get treats from the Totas at Iakhihsohtha and more treats from the Totas at Iohahiio Adult Ed. The drivers of the wagons donated their time and equipment, but the Snye School made a donation to them anyway. Last week, kids from schools in Akwesasne took part in the Annual Wear Red campaign to show their support against drugs. Each day students and teachers were encouraged to get into their inner Batman, Ovechkin, and Rock Star to celebrate the annual campaign to live drug free. The drive is sponsored by the Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Prevention Program and many of their workers were on hand – (in jerseys and wigs) to join in the fun. The two Akwesasne teams pulled off wins last weekend in Massena Men's Broomball. The Chiefs built up a comfortable 3-0 first period lead against Bowlmor and added another early in the second period. Bowlmor then found their stride and scored two quick markers to cut the lead in half. But that was all they could manage and the Chiefs held on for the 5-2 win. Last week the NF Squirt team looked like they would be blown away by the St. Lawrence Thunder as the Thunder scored six seconds into the game. They added two more to head into the first intermission 3-0, but in the middle period a fresh NF team came out and scored three straight of their own to tie. Last week the Kawehnoke facility got the Halloween spirit underway with a fall festival behind their building. Kids had fun coloring and carving pumpkins and listening to "scary stories" from Dave Fadden of the Cultural center. Fadden told of time honored local tales as well as the classics. Last weekend passersby on Kawehnoke had a chance to Buy Local. There was locally made jewelry and other knick knacks, treats from local vendors, a jump house for the kids and some fun Halloween swag at the Akwesasne Local Market Fall Festival. These came from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Department of Economic Development who set up a booth and gave away mugs, Halloween treat bags, pens and other goodies as part of their Buy Local campaign. The annual event was held last week at the Hogansburg/Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Station #1. As with many, many years past "Chief" Dick Laffin put on his presentation to the kids. He has been doing this for a long time and enjoys doing it, according to the other fire fighters. That is changing and the Native North American Travelling College is giving a place for that talent to shine. With a grant under the Ontario Trillium Project the Travelling College is preparing a series of projects to develop a local talent base. The local North Franklin hosted a club from Ottawa last weekend but the guests overstayed their welcome with 8-4 and 6-1 wins. The Ottawa Sting were in town and took both games in Fort Covington Saturday and Sunday. Last Sunday at the Massena Arena, the Chiefs blanked Open Net/Ole Smokehouse 4-0. The 2015 season concluded last weekend with action at Salmon River Central, Fort Covington and Malone. The season ended with an undefeated record for one team and thrilling overtime finals for another. In the 11-12 year old division, the NF Black team won their semi-final over NF Green 4-1. The annual event attracted the best anglers in the territory and the two day event was split between cold and windy conditions on last Saturday and sunshine on Sunday. Last weekend the constant rain forced the Akwesasne Powwow indoors where it successfully went off. However, the Women's Soccer league could not move inside and the rain stopped a few hours before their start time and the games went on at Generations Park where Sergi's defeated the Arrows 4-3. The 2015-16 school year began and the kids - for the most part - were happy to be among their teachers and fellow students again. Please be patient and extra careful when approaching a school bus with lights flashing and even after the lights stop flashing. The children are still excited to be back and might not follow the rules of getting off the bus safely....
There are a lot of resources available in Akwesasne for those who have or know someone with a disability and all of these services were on display in a carnival like setting in Hogansburg. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe's Senior Center hosted the event under the big top with a free lunch, animal balloons, entertainment and an Elvis Presley tribute. This summer the waterfowl have had an increased presence along the shoreline in Kanatakon. They are getting unafraid of humans this year, unlike in the past when they have flown away at the first sight of people. Now they are coming right up and greeting youngsters....
