The annual tradition of the giftbasket giveaway is weeks away and although the aim of making the holidays better is the same, a new crew is behind the scenes. The Akwesasne Holiday Helpers is undertaking the task of putting the food drive together and they are putting all their effort into the project. Although this new group is working from the ground up they have experience in raising funds. Holiday Helpers committee member PJ Herne says most of the Holiday Helpers have previous experience and they were asked to take over. “Most of us sit o...

Last week's game between the Akwesasne Wolves Peewees and South Stormont started out as a slick, fast paced Minor hockey game with lots of hustle, chasing after loose pucks and crisp passes. But midway through the third period it turned into the Charlestown Chiefs and the South Stormont Selects skated to a 10-3 win. Richard Thompson, Aiden Peters and Treyton Sunday scored in the loss at this Anowarako:wa Arena game. South Stormont jumped to a 3-0 first period lead. Thompson's goal ten seconds...

    Derrick Lafrance|Nov 5, 2015

No tricks but lots of treats at Akwesasne Schools and Daycare Centers as the kids all had a blast. The Snye School was treated to a hayride around the area with stops to get treats from the Totas at Iakhihsohtha and more treats from the Totas at Iohahiio Adult Ed. The drivers of the wagons donated their time and equipment, but the Snye School made a donation to them anyway. Gilles Adams scored twice for the Chiefs with Harley Chubb, Matt Thompson and Ryan Drairie scoring one each. Thompson's goal was an empty ne...

But eventually St. Lawrence scored twice in the middle frame to lead 5-3. In the third each team scored once and that first period hole stood up as the Thunder won 6-4. There is a lot of hidden talent in Akwesasne but hardly anywhere for that to be put on display and develop. That is changing and the Native North American Travelling College is giving a place for that talent to shine. With a grant under the Ontario Trillium Project the Travelling College is preparing a series of projects to develop a local talent base. Everything from teaching the kids to act to stage lights and makeup is being planned out. An amphitheater is under construction behind the...

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe's Senior Center hosted the event under the big top with a free lunch, animal balloons, entertainment and an Elvis Presley tribute.
