The Northern New York Snowmobile Drag Racing Club held another event in the Akwesasne territory. The club travels all over the state to put on a show for enthusiasts, and the local crowd was not disappointed. Ryan Brown took home a big haul winning five of the classes including Vintage, Open Modified 900 and Improved 400-500. Dylan Chase won the 600 class while Todd Demarinis won the Outlaws class. The six-team league continued play Wednesdays at AMS on Cornwall Island. The third game of the January 27 matches was cancelled because of lack of players and the remaining players had a scrimmage. Cornwall Novice came to the Anowarako:wa Arena last Saturday and skated off with a 6-1 win. Lorenzo Rand scored the only goal late in the first period unassisted. Last Monday Rand scored three goals in a 4-4 tie against the Alexandria Glens. Evan Sanford scored the other Wolves goal. The two Akwesasne representatives are currently first and second in the Massena Men's Broomball and they continued their winning ways last Sunday both posting shut outs. The Chiefs pasted the Clarkson Flying Hellfish 7-0 while the Ice Pigs blanked Nezezon Construction 3-0. They are the best in their field of Law Enforcement, but not hockey. The event was held last Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Anowarako:wa Arena and teams came from Cornwall, Ottawa, Kahnawake and United States Border Patrol as well as the host Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service and St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police who formed one team. The Positive Place for Kids and Teens where Great Futures start has begun 2016 right where 2015 had left off: Busy. From Monday through Friday every day after school the Rooseveltown facility is hopping with kids interested in all sorts of pursuits. The Akwesasne Wolves Novice club hosted teams from Kahnawake, South Stormont, Canton and NGS last weekend. In the local team's first game they were handed a 3-1 loss to Canton and their second game saw them lose to 8-2 to South Stormont #2. Their third game saw them blank Kahnawake 10-0. That same Kahnawake team was blanked by South Stormont #1 13-0 and also by NGS 14-0. Last weekend the Pawn Shop, despite having a short bench, played a doubleheader on Cornwall Island. In their first game they were nicked by Ray Jan Doors and Windows of Cornwall 6-5. In the first period they fell behind 4-1 but rallied in the second with four goals to come close. Derek Hopps and Katie Bero did all the scoring with Hopps scoring three and Bero two. After having come close to a tournament championship two weeks ago the Akwesasne Wolves Atoms got back into the win column with a close win over North Dundas a day later. Final score 4-3. The Atom Wolves hosted their tournament this past weekend and six teams from the region came out to the Anowarako:wa Arena for a fun filled day of competitive hockey. Teams included the Akwesasne Rep B Wolves, South Dundas Rep B Lions, Kemptville Rep B Panthers, Kahnawake Mohawks A Team, Malone Huskies A Squirt team and Plattsburgh B Squirt Team. Several teams from North Franklin hosted teams from all over the northern region for a Play Day. This is a type of tournament where the rink is divided into two and two games are played at the same time. The play continues after a goal is scored so the action is continuous. The local Little Hawks Youth Broomball team hosted a few teams from Finch, Ontario last weekend on Cornwall Island and sent them home with a few blowouts. In game one the Akwesasne Sprouts won their game 8-1 and in game two the Pee-Wee's won 8-1. Another Finch team was to take on the Bantam/Midget team but they did not show. The Ice Pigs were handed their first loss of the season last Sunday in Massena Men's Broomball and it was to their rival, Akwesasne's The Chiefs. Final score was 6-1. The foods that are part of our life, our National game of Lacrosse, our Kanienkeha language, a demonstration in Native dancing and a social were on the program. Last weekend at the Saint Kateri Hall, the Akwesasne Holiday Helpers held a Toy Drop to coincide with the Annual Christmas Craft Fair. The St. Regis Mohawk School students of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) held a fundraiser Garage Sale and Craft Fair last weekend at their school.
