The theme of Police Week is Developing Community Partnerships and earlier this week the activities began with a bang.... and several crashes. At Generations Park the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department partnered up and held an afternoon of racing and lacrosse. Celebrating our National game was on the agenda this past weekend on Kawehnoke. There were displays about the game, history, speakers and a traditional Medicine game. But the centerpiece of the two day event was an old school wooden stick lacrosse tournament with the team representing Tekahshon'karo:rens (Hogansburg). Every year Akwesasne kids get a chance to hit the water with a brand new fishing pole, tackle and other goodies for the Kids For Fishing program. They also get shuttled around local waters by Angling professionals. That's in two weeks and this past weekend our neighbors in Fort Covington got a chance to share in the fun. A couple of teams from Gloucester and Nepean came to Kawehnoke last Sunday for a couple of hard hitting fast moving lacrosse games. In the first game in the Novice division Jensen White and Kahontiio Lazore did all the scoring for Akwesasne, but Gloucester won that game 11-6. White scored four and Lazore scored twice in that loss. The teams stayed even – tied 2-2 after one period but in the second Gloucester outscored the Storm 5-3 and 4-1 in the third period. The annual event was as big as ever over the weekend. The Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment held their giveaway at the St. Regis Mohawk Seniors Center and the Generations Park pavilion. The event was to get underway at 9:00 am, but people were lined up well before the trucks even arrived with the trees and seeds. The 2016 Akwesasne Storm minor lacrosse season kicked off last Sunday with a full slate of games against the Nepean Knights lacrosse program. In the first game of the day the Tykes teams battled to an 8-8 tie. Drayson Skidders netted four for the Storm while teammates Talys Tasse-Benedict picked up a hat trick and Traven Seymour rounded off the scoring. The Anowarako:wa Arena is open for business for the upcoming Minor Lacrosse season with practices being held. The games start tonight outdoors at Salmon River Central with the Akwesasne Storm Novice, Peewee and Bantam playing at 6, 7 and 8 respectively. The Cornwall Island rink will start games on Sunday with Nepean in town. They will play against the Novice #2 at 2:00, Peewee #2 at 3:00, Bantams at 4:00 and Midgets at 5:00pm....
The flag drops for local racing fans in just a few weeks. Mohawk International Raceway in Frogtown and the Cornwall Motor Speedway open their gates in early May. Traditionally MIR races are every Friday night with the season starting on May 13th, but a week earlier, on Saturday, May 7, MIR is holding their Test and Tuner night and admission is free that night. Lots of things happening last weekend on Kawehnoke at the Recreation Center. They held their annual Scavenger Hunt with seven teams participating. There was also a bingo and spaghetti dinner held with proceeds going to the Island Summer Cultural program. On Good Friday, local kids had a chance to get in some last minute Easter crafts. With two days to go before Easter Sunday, the children in attendance put together arts and crafts and the most-enjoyed project seemed to be the birdhouses. The Native North American Travelling College is introducing the Performing Arts to local youth who might want to consider a future in theater and film. They have been holding workshops on acting and have constructed an amphitheater behind their Kawehnoke facility. Two weeks ago they held a Puppetry class and spent the day designing and creating large puppets as one part of the Performing Arts program. During March break the Island Recreation hosted a Free Movie night featuring the film "The Lion Guard" and "Kung Fu Panda 3." The show was put on by D & T Cinemas with free refreshments offered up. The local cinema company has become a local fixture appearing at birthday parties (Indoor and Out) and other community events throughout the community and is owned by Jason and Alexandra David....
You see a turtle walking across the highway and you pull over to help the little fella off the road. It looks like a garden-variety turtle but as a workshop at the St. Regis Recreation Center showed, there are many different types of turtles indigenous to Akwesasne. Some of those and other species of wildlife are on the way to extinction and the workshop, held last Saturday, March 19, gave an idea of how fragile our environment has become. After winning the regular season championship the Chiefs entered the 2016 post-season with a 10-0 win and went on to repeat as playoff champions. The Ice Pigs placed second in the championship and also finished second in league standings. Third place went to Bowlmor. Congratulations to the Chiefs and Ice Pigs for their great season....
A pair of untimely penalties cost the Ice Pigs the game and the Chiefs take their four game winning streak - as well as first place overall - into the playoffs. Last weekend in Massena the Ice Pigs' Colby Bradford netted one with a slap shot but the Chiefs jumped on a pair of Ice Pigs' penalties to score :30 seconds apart. This weekend the Shamrock Bantams are going to the state finals and combined getting in shape for that big tournament along with raising money for it. Team members had collected pledges for the event and last Sunday some of the team gathered at Heart to Heart Fitness to train for that State tournament. Last weekend the two Akwesasne-based teams kept up their winning ways with the Chiefs defeating Bowlmor and the Ice Pigs winning over Nez Construction. The Massena Broomball Men's league concludes this weekend and fittingly the final night of the regular season puts the Chiefs and Ice Pigs against each other. This is the third meeting of the year with the season series split 1-1 and game time is 7:00 at the Massena Arena....
Last weekend at Cornwall's Benson Center the Wolves team won the House League championship with a big win 7-1 win over Cornwall. Emma Ransom scored four in the win and added an assist. Winning streaks have to end sometime. Unfortunately this one ended at the wrong time. The Stars Indoor soccer club with a core of Akwesasne players went undefeated during the 2015-16 Cornwall Indoor Soccer season going 9-0-1 with that tie being a scoreless game. Last week after a weather delay the Akwesasne Mohawk School students showed their scientific and creative sides during a two day Science Fair. The Early Years program had their portion of the Science Fair on Thursday. Their projects were water related and the students were allowed to have their families help them put together their projects. The little guys and girls had a chance to see what a fast paced sport they got into. Last Sunday two North Franklin Mite teams hosted teams from Malone, Tri-Town and Louisville in their play day. The Snye Homemakers building played host to this annual event where young campers learned valuable skills and lessons.
