The hard work and determination of the A.M.S. students were recognized for November, but this time around the people pushing them at home to hit the books were also recognized. Parents were invited to the monthly awards ceremony held last Friday at the Kawehnoke School and they were thanked for helping their kids meet their reading goal. The Akwesasne girls had their chances but a stingy Gloucester defense and turnovers gave them a 2-1 loss last weekend at the Cornwall Civic Complex. They had big chances though. Both Akwesasne teams were doing very well in the Massena Broomball League both winning games at will – some blowouts. But when they hooked up last Sunday for their first game versus each other it was a fast paced game with the Ice Pigs coming out on top 2-0. Ryan Jacobs scored both goals in the win. It was a meeting last Sunday between the two Akwesasne teams of the Cornwall Indoor Soccer league and they played to a 1-1 tie. The Stars (3-4-2) were coming off a 1-0 loss the week before while the Lady Devils (2-5-2) won their previous game 2-0. Pet lovers overtook Fluffy Tales Grooming and Supplies last weekend. The Akwesasne Animal Society sponsored the event with a reduced rate of $5.00 per shot per animal. The event was scheduled from 2:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m. Saturday but demand had the lineup out the door after that 4:00 cut-off. The Totas at Tsiionkwanonhso:te Long Term Care facility got some unexpected guests last weekend. Two Beautiful Clydesdales escaped from their pens near the facility and wandered through the parking lot. Police were called and kept traffic away during the horses' temporary furlough while the owners were notified. When the owners showed up to collect the pair they were all given a police escort back to the farm....
The two Akwesasne teams in the Massena Men's Broomball League won their respective games last Sunday at the Massena Arena. But both were down to the wire. In their game against Bowlmor, the Chiefs held a 3-1 late lead when Bowlmor scored in the final minute to bring them within one. Eight weeks into the new school year and students across Akwesasne are excelling in their respective schools. Last week the AMS students were recognized for their hard work. There are only 45 shopping days until Christmas but there were some great early ideas at the sale put on by the St. Regis Catholic Church's Altar and Rosary Society. There were blankets, beaded jewelry, woodcarving and other odds and ends including handmade Christmas Tree ornaments to get folks in the mood for the holiday. The Lady Devils picked up their second win of the season last weekend as they edged Les Girlz 2-1. Jenna Prieur and Iakokwennienstha Porter scored those goals. Midway through the second half Les Girlz had an excellent chance to tie as they were presented with an open net, but the ball rang off the crossbar and the Devils held on for the win. The Chiefs had a pair of back-to-back games, which turned into back-to-back shutouts last Sunday at the Massena Arena. In their first game of the doubleheader they handed the Norwood Legion a 3-0 loss. Derek Hopps, Matt Thompson and Travis Thompson scored in that win. With the first month of the new school year in the books, the Kawehnoke School celebrated by honoring their hard working students. The awards ceremony was held last Friday, October 14 and the theme for September was Respect. In addition to their awards the Students of the Month were given certificates for Boston Pizza. The Akwesasne Mohawk School Food Pantry Team has been up and running for over a year and it provides a little extra food for families in need. This year's kick off event was the Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive and it was a huge success! The goal was to collect 320 non- perishable items. This works out to 1 item per student. With the ice installed at the Anowarako:wa Arena, the 2016-17 hockey season geared up last week, but between the games came some Friday night Rock and Skating fun. Akwesasne Child and Family Services sponsored the Rock and Skate held last Friday. These sessions will be held every Friday evening from 8 to 10 pm. The Akwesasne Mohawk School on Kawehnoke started their 2016-17 school year with song and dance. Last week they held their Harvest Social with help from the Native North American Travelling College Travel Troupe. Each session was divided up into age categories and the Travelling College presenter explained the song they were about to perform and the story behind it. In the past, the Bums softball program travelled and hosted various teams from all over the North Country and last weekend their children and grandchildren shared in their love of the game. The hurrah on the local lacrosse scene took place last weekend but the top award went to Kahnawake. The Randall "Mann" Jacobs Memorial Lacrosse tournament was held at the Travis Solomon Memorial Box at Generations Park and teams came in from Tyendinaga and Kahnawake. The fifth annual event was held last weekend at the American Legion, and the Saints took home yet another title. In the past few weeks the Saints won the Lisa Lafrance Memorial tournament and were crowned "A" division champions of the Akwesasne Co-Ed softball league.
