The Akwesasne Attack lacrosse club brought their game to the Massena High School last weekend. A Playday was held and local clubs performed very well, winning and losing, but representing well our field lacrosse community. The 2017 Cornwall District Soccer league began last week. Both Akwesasne teams – the Lady Devils and Stars won their games – and both by the same 5-2 score. At Long Sault the Lady Devils, behind Iastha Porter's three goals, defeated McLeans Block. Jenna Prieur and Lady Devils' addition Karley Cree scored one each. Last weekend was a hot one so, a couple groups' of kids hit the roadside to raise money. In Kanatakon, Camrin King is trying to raise money for various lacrosse expenses and he, along with mom and sister Bria, sold Indian Tacos and Lemonade. On Kawehnoke, a group of friends set up a roadside stand and sold a variety of items in hopes of making enough money to buy themselves some Polaroid cameras and film. Youth who want to learn the game or sharpen their skills have just recently participated in the Spikes Babes Volleyball program. This was weekly training sessions at the Kanatakon School and Heart to Heart, and under the instruction of coaches Nancy Jacobs, Tatum Lafrance, Bailey Thomas, Torri Skidders and Tianna Back, they learned all aspects of the game. The always tough and fast Nepean Knights and Gloucester Griffins lacrosse programs came to Kawehnoke and put up some entertaining Minor Lacrosse action last weekend. In the morning games the Akwesasne Storm played against Gloucester clubs and in the afternoon they played against Nepean. The Cornwall Celtics provided rough, hard-hitting, fast-passing, lacrosse 40 years ago against Akwesasne. Last weekend that same spirit repeated itself on Kawehnoke. The Akwesasne Storm lacrosse program hosted their counterparts from across the river and like the rivalry 40 years ago there was hard hits, near fights, blowouts, hot goaltending and crisp passing plays. Elders at the St. Regis Seniors Center were treated last weekend to some great music from one of our own local performers. The River Mohawks were there to play up the release of their "Shine On! Shine On!" CD. They played country music standards that local fans have been listening to for years; Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, James Taylor and others were performed as the seniors got up to dance. Last week, students from the southern portion were off on Spring Break and the Rooseveltown club was there for them. "Staycation" is an annual program where the club opens during the day as opposed to its regular afterschool hours of operation throughout the school year. As per history, when Kahnawake comes to town, it is always some of the more spirited lacrosse competition. The Anowarako:wa Arena opened it's floor for the 2017 lacrosse season and several teams from Kahnawake made the trip along with plenty of loud and cheering fans. Easter festivities got underway last weekend at Snye Recreation. A Pie Bingo was held Saturday with meat pies and apple pies stacked and ready to go in the kitchen. During the intermission, an Easter Bonnet judging was held with the gang from Iakhihsohtha making the trip and joining in on the fun. The St. Regis Rec Dance Club put on a big performance for one of their own. Last weekend the Club held the third Lip Sync Battle to raise funds to help Jordan Reese with medical costs. They raised over $3800 and the battle was co-sponsored by the St. Regis Recreation Committee. Generous donations were from Dr. Daniel, Cass Terrance and Mary and Philip Gray. The Stars Women's Soccer team of the Cornwall Indoor Soccer league won their matchup last weekend 1-0 over Dr. Bosse Dental. Lindsay Kennedy of the Stars got a kick off against Marissa Fontaine in the Dr. Bosse Dental net. The rebound came out to Kelby Mitchell who tucked it home. The Seaway Valley Rapids Atom AA hosted the Gloucester Rangers last weekend on Kawehno:ke and despite several excellent chances Gloucester handed them a 10-1 loss. Kaiden Pyke scored the Rapid's only goal-a second period tally-as he weaved his way from the blue line and stick-handled around the Ranger's defenders to score. The two Akwesasne based clubs had their third meeting of the Cornwall Indoor Soccer season last weekend with the Stars winning this round 2-1. The Cornwall Colts Novice team stayed with the Akwesasne Wolves for one period but then their wheels fell off. On Monday, January 30 the two clubs met on Kawehno:ke and traded first period goals. Last week the Akwesasne Atom "B" team pulled off a squeaker 2-1 win over the NGS Braves. Kinley Rourke of the Wolves finally connected in the second period to open the scoring. Depleted opposition benches made for a runaway couple of games for the Chiefs in Massena Men's Broomball. In their first game last Sunday the Akwesasne team had almost two full lines while their opponents-Clarkson-had only one line and two spares. The Chiefs walked to a 7-0 win.
