The Massena Men's Broomball league came to a close last weekend with one of the Akwesasne representatives winning the big one. The Ice Pigs finished the season in first place and on the way to that Championship game last weekend they beat Nezerons Construction 4-1. On Saturday they defeated Akwesasne rival The Chiefs 2-0, and the final saw them blank Norwood Legion 8-1. Goalie Evan Cree was the regular season Most Valuable Player. The theme of the day was the future powwow dancers of today and they put on a big show. The Seventh Annual event was held at the former IGA building in Hogansburg last Saturday and as happens annually the building was filled to capacity with proud family members watching their young ones dancing with pride. The Cornwall Women's Soccer league ended last weekend with the Lady Devils winning their Division 3 Championship. Jadie Burns scored the lone goal over Olson Fabrications, and Cheyenne Lazore recorded the shutout. Weeks of practice is coming to a head, and this weekend the future Powwow dancers will be showing off their stuff in Hogansburg. The annual Children's Powwow is set for Saturday, March 10, 2018 and for the past several weeks workshops and practices were held at the Kana:takon School and the Native North American Travelling College. Several local lacrosse players and supporters of our game were honored last weekend for their love and dedication to the game. At the ceremony held at Brass Horse eight players and builders were accepted into the Hall of Fame. The players were from the 1970's and 80's and played with or against each other. The school students pulled together to cheer up one of their friends in her time of need. Kana:takon student Camryn Cook has been undergoing medical treatments and last week her classmates offered her Get Well cards and sang songs to cheer her up. The Kawehno:ke School marked their 100th day and the first awards ceremony of the new year. The theme of the month for January was Perseverance and the awards ceremony was held last Friday, February 9. This month's sponsor of the First Class club was Kastowa Gas who donated goodies for the students who got to watch the proceedings from First Class seating on the side of the AMS gymnasium. New home – same story. A perfect season. Last Sunday at the Benson Center in Cornwall the Wild's Jenna Merpaw scored four goals as they defeated the Russell Coyotes 5-2. The Anowarako:wa Arena is closed for the season and the Wild relocated to other venues for the year. The 2017-18 school year is at its halfway point and the students at AMS are still working hard to be the best. Last Friday, January 19, the school held their monthly awards ceremony for the month of December. The St. Regis River annually rises over the banks in Hogansburg. Some years it's minor but this winter the high water levels have the potential to cause flooding not seen in 38 years. A few houses have reported flooded basements and ice floes up to their back porch. It was in 1980 when houses were completely flooded out and although the ice is jamming up it hasn't reached that point yet. However the authorities are not taking chances. The kids had a few laughs while learning about a couple of timeless classics. The DuffleBag Theatre group paid a visit to the St. Regis Mohawk School last week bringing with them productions of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Robin Hood. The theatre troupe does improvisation using members from the audience to play the various characters. The Lanark County Condors girls visited the Anowarako:wa Arena last week and despite having only nine skaters they put up a big effort against the Akwesasne Wild. The St. Regis Mohawk School was alive with Native song and dance. Last Friday, November 17, Native American Day was celebrated at the Hogansburg school. The day consisted of storytelling, singing and social dancing, and arts and crafts. The day was divided up into classes.
