    Last weekend a young soccer player's dream of playing internationally came closer to reality. Skyler Mason has been invited to play for Team British Columbia in the upcoming NIFA tournament in Hawaii in August. Several fundraisers were held including a softball tournament last weekend at the American Legion Post 1479. When it was over, Dacobras and The Royals shared the Championship.     Household pets have a rough summer ahead as the region is expected to be hit by a higher than usual tick population. In addition to that they have to deal with summer heat and the last thing they need is a virus. Some of those got a break last weekend as the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals sponsored a Parvo Clinic for dogs at the Kawehnoke Fire Station.     Softball fan and supporter Tony Laughing was honored again last weekend with the tournament held in Bombay in his name. When it was over the Dirty Byrdz won the championship over Bitterz and Bones. Proceeds from the tournament go to different deserving college students in the form of scholarships. Earlier this week students at the Kanatakon, Tsi Snaihne and Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Schools held Playdays.     Last Monday in Massena, Mustang Sally's scored early and withstood a Coaches Corner big 7th inning rally to squeeze out the 14-12 win. Sunnie Francis, Tori Garrow, Jade Smoke and Louise White scored two runs each in the win.     Last Saturday lacrosse teams from Tyendinaga, Cornwall, Markham, Ontario and Brampton, Ontario all came to Kawehnoke and got trounced out of the Anowarako:wa Arena. The Akwesasne Storm Peewee 2 team hosted Tyendinaga in two games and won them both 11-3 and 13-5. In between those games the Novice 2 team played Cornwall Celtics and won 8-1.     A friendly rivalry took place at the Mohawk School in Hogansburg last week and along with tips on field lacrosse, they got some valuable information about health issues. The Attack Lacrosse program grades 3/4 team held a clinic followed by a short scrimmage against the Massena program.     The Gloucester Griffins made it a close game for a period and a half, actually taking the lead at one point, but the Akwesasne Indians put together a series of scoring runs in the second and third periods for the 17-7 win. This game was on Thursday, May 17. The Indians held a slim 3-2 first period lead but the visiting Griffins opened the middle period with three unanswered goals in the first three minutes to hold a 5-3 edge.     New lighting, new scoreboard, new season for our National game. The Anowarako:wa Arena was open for business as of last week after being closed for several months due to a fire. After the fire, the ice rink was taken out and while repairs where being done, local hockey teams took to the road, mainly at the Benson Center in Cornwall.     Last week's horrific bus crash in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, which claimed the lives of 16 players and a trainer, sent the country in mourning.     Last week, the area was rocked by big wind gusts and there was the usual tree limbs littered all over, as well as power outages associated with it. After school activities were cancelled at local schools and there were reports of lawn furniture finding new homes.
