    On Saturday, June 30, the Akwesasne Xtreme women’s volleyball team hosted this season’s first beach tournament at Brass Horse Grill. The tournament was a benefit for the women’s team who is competing in the Aboriginal National Invitational Volleyball Championships this weekend.     Through the rain, the heat, and the wind, participants of Snye’s first Co-ed Beach Volleyball League competed this summer for the first championship title. Seven teams gathered at the Snye Recreation Center each Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday evening for intense and competitive volleyball.     Volleyball athletes and coaches from across Canada come together each summer in a highly anticipated weeklong volleyball camp called Camp Madawaska, which is located in the Bancroft area. Madawaska is a volleyball intensive camp that was established in 1972 and over the years has grown to house over 120 coaches and 520 campers between the ages of 12 and 17.     On March 14th through March 17th the Soaring Eagles Volleyball Club held their annual “March Madness Volleyball Camp”. The camp was open to all volleyball athletes, ages 6 to 14, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. The athletes were exposed to many different components that help to build a well rounded volleyball player.     The Mohawk Language Program in our AMBE schools is currently learning about trees common to our territory. By the end of the unit, students will be able to name the trees in Kanien’keha and will also be able to identify specific trees by their unique characteristics.     On January 27th of each year, Family Literacy Day is celebrated across Canada. This special day brings adults and children together to read and learn as a family; it also encourages families to take 15 minutes each day to enjoy a learning activity.
