    Eight local girls won a chance to compete at the international level after winning the Ontario Aboriginal Summer Games volleyball tournament on Sunday, August 25. They will travel to Regina, Saskatchewan in late July of next year to represent Ontario in the North American Indigenous Games. An estimated 6,000 athletes will compete in the games.     Four people are facing federal indictments accusing them of conspiring to bring illegal aliens to U.S. soil stemming from a case that began in February. John Benedict and Angela Johnson pleaded not guilty on Thursday, August 22 in U.S. District Court, Syracuse, to conspiracy to bring aliens into the United States for purposes of commercial advantage and private financial gain.     The Caughnawaga Indians took the Iroquois Lacrosse Association’s top honor for the 2013 season on Thursday, Aug. 15, defeating the Snake Island Muskies 8 – 6 in game five of a best-of-seven series at Massena Arena.   • Benedict Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

    A Cornwall Island, Ont., man was sentenced to just over three years in prison on Monday, Aug. 12 for conspiring to smuggle oxycodone through Akwesasne. Nathan Benedict, 34, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Albany to 37 months behind bars to be followed by three years’ post-release supervision. He admitted in March 2011 to charges of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute and to distribute a controlled substance.     Akwesasne Co-Ed Softball League action on Sunday, August 4 saw the Boob Pigs squeeze past the Braves 17 – 14 at the American Legion field. The Pig squad ferociously opened the game, sending six runners across the plate and going through their lineup twice.
