The Plattsburgh Central School District is now recognizing Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples Day. The Board of Education voted 5-2 in favor at the end of February, according to district Superintendent Jake Short. “The board members were persuaded by the depth of the students presentations and to some extent their own feelings about honoring Native Americans over Columbus,” Short said. After narrowly taking the Section 10 Division I championship, the Massena boys varsity hockey team’s season came to an end against Section 1 champs Mamaroneck. Alcoa will idle the Massena West smelter and will not modernize its closed east plant. This is in spite of a deal with the state to maintain 750 jobs at the west plant and modernize the pot line at the east plant in exchange for megawatts of discount-rate electricity from the New York Power Authority. The Akwesasne Fastbreakers won the WB Goodnow Agency "B" Cup in the 2015 Droppin' the Gloves on Cancer fundraiser. The event raised money to help cancer patients at Massena Memorial and Canton-Potsdam hospitals.
