The Akwesasne Chiefs will not play hockey this season and may not come back in the future. Phil DeFranco, who had been involved with the team said they didn’t get enough players for a full roster. He deferred further comment to Stuart Oberman, who was the team’s owner. Oberman did not return phone calls. DeFranco added that canceling the season was also to not add to their debts. The girls varsity hockey team’s roster includes KC Herne, a returning MVP, Tori Gray and Abigail Johnson from Akwesasne. Traffic in Massena looking to cross the Grasse River will not be able to use the Parker Avenue bridge until next year, and the underpass will be closed permanently. On Sept. 12, the Department of Transportation closed the bridge, which is expected to be shut down until the fall of 2017. They are taking it down and rebuilding the structure.
