On Saturday March 10th, the Akwesasne Girl Scouts celebrated 100 Year Anniversary of Girl Scouts. Over 90 participants attended the event and were treated to a Girl Scout Cookie Buffet along with other snacks and drinks. Many door prizes were given out during the event. Some activities included a Cookie Booth Sale, 100 turn hula hoop contest, 100 years from now essay contest, and 100 years coloring contest. On February 12th the local girl scouts hosted the 2nd “Girl Scouts Give Back Valentine’s Skating Party” at the Salmon River Central arena during public skating. Girl Scouts and their parents gave out free hot cocoa, tea, treats and goodies for all who attended skating on that day....

From February 7th to March 4th, the PATS (Potsdam Akwesasne Talent Search) Program along with the BLACK (Brothers Leading America Continuing Knowledge) group conducted a book drive within Akwesasne and surrounding areas and set a goal to collect at least 303 books. Once collected, the books would then be distributed amongst the male students at the Tsi Snaihne School allowing each boy to take home three books. The book drive exceeded their goal and raised over 1000 books allowing for each boy...
On Thursday, March 24th, the community showed their support at the awards ceremony for the Prescription Drug Abuse Strategy Video Contest while recognition was given to those who participated and placed in the event. Participants were asked to create a 1-3 minute video explaining why they are drug-free and how they plan on living a drug free life. On June 20, 2009, a Blanding’s Turtle, a threatened species in New York State, was found by Jacoba North on the centerline of Route 37 between IGA and the Casino. Jacoba contacted the SRMT Environment Division, who then contacted Glenn Johnson, a biology professor.
