A Voice from the Eastern Door
Mark Twain would have been proud, more so Huck Finn. On Saturday, a group of brave, creative and resourceful men and women launched their homemade rafts into the St. Regis River on Saturday, August 8, 2015. The announcement for a "Homemade Raft" contest was written on a paper bag and posted in the American Legion. With no further postings, announcements or meetings other than the paper bag, over ten groups entered their homemade rafts and paddled downriver and spent most of the day paddling to two stations and ending near the St. Lawrence River. The rafts were made of a combination of materials; barrels, pallets, even a truck bed liner and many "rafters" dressed for the occasion in costume. With the popularity of this event, we can be sure another adventure will be held next year.
