The blockade at Elsipogog First Nation is in protest of the Texas-based natural resources company SWN Canada that began exploring for natural gas deposits in the region. Opponents to the exploration worry that it will soon lead to hydraulic fracturing, the practice known as fracking that involves injecting noxious chemicals into the ground to break out the oil and gas deposits. The protest was backed by the Signigtog District Grand Council, which represents Mi’kmaq communities across southern N...

In the fall of 1813 the Mohawks of Akwesasne were once again at the perilous position. Formal hostilities between Britain and the United States had resulted in war the previous year. Akwesasne was in a unique geographical location considered essential for the defense of Canada and, by the Americans, as vital to their planned invasions along the St. Lawrence River. On the territory itself factions resulted from divided loyalties, a remnant from the American Revolution. The pro-Americans were led by Louis Cook, a commissioned officer by General...

Monday my boys and I both had a real day off. That is a rare thing and we were determined about taking full advantage. After all it was our only time where we didn’t have any place to be except with each other. We made plans to meet family over at the Mcmaze farm outside of Cornwall, Ontario. We got to the farm right before they opened so in the time it took us to get our gear the gates were open. The boys were all over the place. First it was all about the barn then it was off to the corn launcher. Once they ran out of corncobs to hurl we h...
Submitted by Paul Hetzler, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County As winter draws nearer, sweet corn is but a distant memory and field corn is fast disappearing into the insatiable headers of roaring combines. But here and there a few market growers and gardeners are bringing in some less common types of corn. While not very significant to the regional economy, locally raised popcorn and decorative “Indian” corn have emotional and cultural value that goes beyond their monetary worth. In recent years, US farmers in the Midwest have...
